Obsidian Gaming

Obsidian Gaming
Summary
Obsidian Gaming is an independent UI project. I designed a digital product from scratch in a field I care about. The goal wasn't just a few good-looking pages: I wanted an experience where a player can discover games, look into them, and choose their next one with more confidence.
It was a chance to take one idea the whole way: from the first concept and page structure, through the interface design, to an interactive demo.
The problem
The starting point was my own experience with Iranian gaming platforms such as Zoomg and game download sites. Almost all of them shared one problem: there was no clear, well-organised way to find a game.
So I focused on a single “game discovery” experience rather than a store or a download hub: one where search, filters, scores, related content and each game's details sit together in one consistent place. Instead of redesigning an existing product, I proposed my own answer to the problem.
Audience
Gamers who follow new releases and want information, scores and related content before they choose:
- players looking for their next game
- players comparing a few titles
- players who want to hear from others through creator videos and forums
This audience is my own assumption for now. It hasn't been validated with user research.
Process
- Idea: I defined the parts that make game discovery complete.
- Structure: page layout, how game information is shown, search and filters, and the game card.
- Visual design: once the structure held, I built the visual identity around the project's gaming mood.
- Live demo: I turned part of the design into an interactive demo, so the interactions aren't just still images.
The project started in early July 2026. Along the way its scope grew, and a game details page and a few other pages were added. The design was done in Figma and the live demo is published on WordPress.
Key design decisions
1. Search and filters before the list

On a game discovery platform, sometimes the user already has a game in mind and sometimes they want to browse several games by different criteria. That's why search and filters sit at the top of the page, available before the list.
The aim was to shorten the path to the main tools. Users don't have to scroll through everything before they can narrow the results.
2. The game card: two scores, two buttons

The two scores are two different kinds of rating:
- Community score: what the player community thinks of the game.
- Obsidian score: the platform's own rating, based on defined criteria and an independent review framework.
Seeing both side by side lets players compare the crowd's view with the platform's. To make this a system people can trust, though, the criteria and the way each score is calculated need to be defined precisely. That hasn't been done yet.
The two buttons serve two different intentions:
- “I want to play”: adds the game to a personal list without leaving the page.
- “Details”: opens the game's own page for a closer look.
3. Creator videos and forums

Choosing a game isn't only about text and scores. Creator videos give a more tangible sense of the world, the gameplay and the style. Forums open a door to other players' conversations and experiences.

With these sections I wanted the product to go beyond a simple list of games and have room to grow into a place for discovery, review and conversation. In the current demo both sections are for display only and aren't connected to a real content or discussion service.
4. The game details page

After discovering a game, the user comes here to look closer. The details and both scores sit in a column beside the text, with the “I want to play” button under them. Tabs separate the Obsidian review, the forum, videos and system requirements.
Visual system
The visual identity is built on a dark, high-contrast gaming mood:
- Dark greys: a deep, focused background
- Red: to draw attention, highlight what matters and add energy
The combination fits what people expect from a gaming product and creates a clear contrast between a calm background and the interactive elements. I didn't just want the usual gaming colours. I wanted a recognisable identity that keeps every part of the product visually consistent.
Project status
The project has gone beyond Figma: a live demo is published on my personal site.
- Interactive: search, filters, adding a game to your list, and the details page.
- Display only: videos, profiles, discussions and the newsletter. They aren't connected to a back end or any service.
This is an interactive sample of the product's interface, not a complete gaming platform ready for public use.
If I started again
- Validate the idea first, then grow the pages. I'd talk to a few gamers: how they choose games, what they look at when comparing, and how much other players' scores matter to them.
- Test the two scores. Do they actually help people decide, or do they confuse?
- Test the prototype with users, especially the path through search, filters, saving a game and opening the details page.
- Set the scope of the first version early: which features fit a first release, and which need their own infrastructure.
What I learned
This project helped me understand the difference between designing a feature and building a real service. Designing a forum section is not the same as building user accounts, data storage and discussion management.
Obsidian Gaming shows product design process, structural thinking and the ability to turn a design into a working demo. It can still get better with user research, interaction testing and finishing the display-only sections.
